Spotlight: Afternoon Tea in Venice
This post is a bit of a cheat! Last year, while visiting Venice, my friend and I stopped by the lovely and historic Caffè Florian. We found out they offer afternoon tea, but unfortunately, we weren’t there at the right time. Instead, we enjoyed some delicious desserts, scones, and cappuccinos. So, here’s a little love for the oldest coffee house in Italy—where you can also enjoy afternoon tea if you time it right!
A Little Bit of History: Caffè Florian, one of the world’s oldest coffee houses and THE oldest coffee house in Italy, has been a Venice landmark since it first opened in St. Mark’s Square on December 29, 1720. Originally called “Alla Venezia Trionfante,” it quickly became known as “Florian’s” after its founder, Floriano Francesconi. For over 300 years, Caffè Florian has served as a gathering place for both Venetians and visitors. Throughout its rich history, the café has witnessed the rise and fall of the Republic of Venice, provided refuge during uprisings, and welcomed a diverse array of patrons—from Venetian nobility and artists to modern-day celebrities.
The Experience: In addition to afternoon tea, Caffè Florian offers breakfast, brunch, "light lunch," snacks, and a variety of cakes, parfaits, and ice creams. Their drink menu includes coffees, teas, alcoholic beverages, soft drinks, and juices, ensuring there’s something for everyone, whether you're looking for a casual bite, drink, or dessert. My friend and I were seated right away—she ordered scones with jam, while I opted for tiramisu, and we both enjoyed cappuccinos. Afternoon tea is served from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and includes a choice of Florian blend teas, freshly baked English scones with jam and cream, macarons, and a selection of finger sandwiches.
As of Today: Afternoon tea at Florian’s starts at €40.00. It can be upgraded with a glass of sparkling wine for €55.00 or with Champagne for €65.00. Check out the full menu at Florian’s here.
My Rating: Since I didn’t experience the full afternoon tea here, it wouldn’t be fair to rate it! But the scones, tiramisu, cappuccinos, service, and ambiance were a 5/5.
